AI will encroach upon our agency—just one of the many unintended consequences organizations need to consider. As environments and people take on new characteristics, shift priorities, and demonstrate new skills, the organizations seeking to understand them must pay close attention. Through qualitative research, the ID student team identified seven trends that are currently shaping and challenging the field of design—and are likely to continue to be influential over the next five years. The Institute of Design at Illinois Tech (ID) released the Lead with Purpose report to highlight design’s central role in realizing executive vision. The research team set out to define the future roles of designers to forecast what design roles would look like in three to five years, and what skills individuals will need to fill those roles.

In the 1960s, two decades before it was common, ID pioneered the use of computers to support analysis and synthesis in design. In the late 1980s, ID faculty noticed an increasing need for organizations to link their strategy to a deeper understanding of people. Thus, ID created areas of study in strategic design planning and human-centered design to complement traditional specialties like communication design and product design. As design addressed larger problems and increased its influence in various parts of organizations, it became evident that design needed a more formal body of knowledge.

Master of Design
To help increase the rigor and speed of the development of new theories and methods in design, and with the support of the GE Foundation, ID created the first Ph.D. program in design in the United States. Today, ID is focused on using design methods to address complex problems that confront organizations and society at large. The Master of Design (M.Des.) program is a two-year, 54 credit-hour degree program intended for those seeking professional mastery at the highest level in the field. The program does not require the formal selection of a concentration area or a final thesis project. Students may construct their own curriculum after taking a core of courses focused on understanding users, analyzing complex information, and exploring and prototyping alternative solutions.

Minor in Human-Centered Design
If you are joining ID directly after your undergraduate program and do not have a final official transcript at the time of admission, you will be required to have your transcripts officially validated during the first semester of your enrollment. We expect applicants to have achieved a certain level of professional experience before entering a program. While the MDes program has no minimum experience requirement, two or more years of professional experience is preferred.
Full-time Faculty
This course is for students who are interested in leading and facilitating multi-disciplinary collaborative projects using design as know-how to innovate. Students will learn design tactics and strategies for knowledge brokering through tutorials, examples, practical activities and simulations. This course examines research methods used throughout the design and development process from process, financial, and results standpoints with a focus on planning research activities. At ID, we prepare leaders to take on thorny, complex challenges in areas like sustainability, healthcare, education, business innovation, and urban life.
Fall 2024 Admission
By pursuing rigorous research in an area that aligns with work by our PhD faculty, you’ll work directly in some of the most exciting design-focused work being done today. Program requires continuous full-time study at the Institute of Design for a minimum of four semesters (a minimum of five semesters for those in the M.Des. with the Foundation sequence). Students must enroll in at least 13.5 credit hours of coursework each semester. Completion of the Ph.D. program requires six semesters (107 credit hours) in addition to an existing master's degree.
Your time here will prepare you for your future, however you decide to make an impact. Students select a series of courses to meet their professional goals in consultation with their adviser. Courses may be chosen from any 500-level or 600-level IDN or IDX non-required course, and up to 12 credit hours from the 400-level Foundation courses (IDN 481–IDN 497), provided that those courses are not also applied as program prerequisites. Up to six credit hours may be taken outside of ID with the approval of the student's adviser.
Internal processes are shifting, as this new priority forces organizations to challenge traditional business flows and processes. Instead of designing social responsibility departments to compensate for unsustainable solutions, corporations are working to embed smart, sustainable, and inclusive growth into their production systems. Students pursuing these certificates typically complete them in the final year of their program. A separate application and admission to the Stuart School of Business is required to enroll, which students will submit during their first year of study at ID.
Students will review designs to better understand the elements that led to significant design breakthroughs. This class focuses on the study and development of visualizations to expand information presentation by using dynamic, interactive properties. Explorations to include data narratives, data visualization, time-based visualizations, analyzing motion, narration, transitions, and other visual properties that can enhance comprehension. This course is an introduction to the techniques and processes involved in portfolio planning. We will explore the role of portfolio planning in typical organizations and how it relates to other processes like strategy and specific product development.
